Book Reviews 2019

The problem with me and with reading books is if there’s a book that I disliked, I stop reading for a while. This is exactly what happened to me this quarter. I still managed to read three books and I’m still way ahead of my Goodreads challenge but it’s a bit disappointing since I still think reading is the best past time there is.

The Daughter by Jane Shemilt //★★★☆☆

This book is the reason why I stopped reading. It’s a story about a daughter who went missing and how her mother tried to find her.

The plot sounds good but how the story unraveled was a pain to read. It was painstakingly slow and there was too much unrelated information. There was also too much drama, no character development, and an abrupt ending. Half of the book was wasted and I just hated the transitions between the past and the present.

Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami //★★★☆☆

My only Murakami book this quarter and I’m giving it three stars. It’s a compilation of short stories that revolves around the effects of a woman leaving or hurting a man.

I didn’t enjoy this book mostly because I don’t like the whole men can’t live or will have a hard time living without a woman plots. Yes, people, things and places affect us a lot but I also believe that even if those things scar us, we can always rise above it. We can always be stronger.

The Late Show by Michael Connelly //★★★☆☆

This is the first book for the Renee Ballard series from Michael Connelly. To be honest, it’s an okay book. I didn’t like that it felt too easy. The crime was solved too quickly and it was a bit too straight forward for me.

Other than the overall feeling of the book, I still enjoyed reading it since it gave you an insight on how police officers on the night shift operate. It was an enjoyable read but I wouldn’t recommend.

I only have two more books to finish from my Big Bad Wolf haul. I’m excited to finish it and buy more books! I saw the book Pachinko by Lee Min Jin at a store a few months ago and I’m so excited to buy and read it. I’m also practicing a low buy with my books so wish me luck that I can finally finish the last two books and go buy new ones.

To keep it short and simple: I'm thirty+ years old. Still plenty young, but not as young as I used to be.

  1. Waaah!! I’m so inggit. Buti ka pa nakarami ka na ng nababasa, me? Ahhh never mind. HAHAHA The last book sounded right up my alley, lam mo naman me and my brain plus crime and detective … pero when you mention too easy uhhmmmm, never mind hahahaha ayaw ko rin ng crime thriller na easy. HAHAHA

    1. Hahaha!! I try to read a chapter before going to bed or during weekends. Pero lately mabagal kasi nga hindi ko type yung mga nababasa ko. I agree sa mga crime books gusto ko yung mapapa-“WHAT” ako. Pero yung last book was very meh talaga. 😦

      1. Naku, ako yung tipo na I just do not have the patience to read one chapter at a time. May it be a book or a show, I’m the binge-watcher and binge-reader kind’a person. HAHAHA

    1. I’ll buy it after I finish reading my books from BBW. I hope you start reading it hahaa so I can read your review. So far I’ve seen all 5 star ratings that’s why I want to read it. I hope I like it!

  2. I am the same way– when I finish a book I don’t like, I am kind of turned off from reading for awhile. I absolutely love what you said in your second review. You’re right. ❤
