Shows I’ve Watched Lately

Another quarter is done and dusted. I must admit, this quarter I watched a lot of series and wasted hours in front of the television. It wasn’t productive at all but I have no regrets. For this quarter, I have two posts and the first one starts right now.

Romance is a Bonus Book  //★★★★☆

I absolutely loved this series. At first I watched it because of Lee Jong Suk but as I continued to watch it, I realized that he was just a bonus book. From my point of view, this series revolved around the girls. We have the leading lady who was forced to retire from her job to become a housewife. After she got divorced, she had to go back into the corporate world. (This is something I connected with and really put some sense into me. I always thought that if I got married and had kids, I’d resign and just settle into a housewife role but after seeing this I realized that I should learn how to balance my career and personal life. I don’t have to choose.)

We also have several supporting characters like the single yet successful director who put her career first, the recently divorced career woman who learned how to balance being a mom and her career, the young supervisor, and the young woman who was just starting out her career. Each character had their own story to tell and most of them really resonated with me especially the story of the young supervisor and the story of the working mom.

This series appealed to me because I got to see the different stages of womanhood and every story had a lesson. The most important lesson I got was no matter what adversity we face (not only as women but as humans) we should always be resilient and keep on going. The road is long and if we persevere, we will eventually get there.

Black Summer //★★★★☆

I have very mixed feelings about this series – mostly because the ending had a conclusion and I wasn’t expecting that from an American series. It was very exciting and gripping. You can really get sucked into it and watch all the episodes in one sitting.

I hated how fast the zombies were though. I also hated (and not just in this series but in all zombie series) the fact that at one point the enemy becomes a person and not the zombie. Do we have to lose our humanity just because there are zombies? I’m not going to spoil you too much but you should really watch this series.

Mr. Sunshine //★★★★★

I enjoyed watching this series! I absolutely loved everything about it. It was well written and filmed. This Korean series goes all the way to the top of my 2019 list.

The plot is a sad love story set during the time when Japan was trying to invade Korea. We have three men who have fallen helplessly in love with a noblewoman whose one true love is her country, Korea. It isn’t just a love story, it’s about Korea, it’s people and it’s history. It’s such a beautiful story. I highly recommend you to watch this.

Street Food //★★★☆☆

I didn’t exactly finish all the episodes in this series. I only watched Thailand, Philippines, Japan and India. I was hoping to be introduced to different kinds of street foods but what I got was a story about a street food vendor. It was interesting to hear their stories but to be honest, I don’t care.

To keep it short and simple: I'm thirty+ years old. Still plenty young, but not as young as I used to be.
