I have been hearing a lot about Black Mirror even before receiving this free six months trial of Netflix from Globe. I heard it was on another level but never did I thought that I would be so mindblown by a freaking show.

Now that I’m waiting for the next season, I decided to share with you my favorite episodes in hopes that: 1) you’ll watch Black Mirror yourself and 2) we’ll talk about it in the comments below. Please note that the following episodes might not be the best in other people’s eyes but these were the episodes that really resonated with me. It has gotten me to a point of actually questioning myself and what I believe in, sort of.

*The next part may or may not contain spoilers. Consider this a warning.*

Season 1

Episode 3: The Entire History of You

Black Mirror - Entire History of You

In the near future, everyone has access to a memory implant that records everything humans do, see and hear.

This episode has to be one of the most gut-wrenching yet mind-blowing episodes for me. I loved that this was just about a guy’s instinct and how that escalated to a whole different level thanks to technology. Some questions I’ve had after watching this was, was it worth it? Knowing the truth and in the end, have that truth ruin you? I don’t condone cheating but what if you love somebody, and I mean you truly love somebody, would you be able to live without that person? Would it have been better to just turn a blind eye and forgive?

Season 2

Episode 2: White Bear

Black Mirror - White Bear

Victoria wakes up and cannot remember anything about her life. Everyone she encounters refuses to communicate with her.

A woman wakes up in a world where people are trying to kill people (including herself) while other people are just watching/taking videos of her. It turns out in the end that she is a criminal guilty of taking a video of a murder of a young child. She is made to go through this scenario every day as a punishment for her crime.

This episode has made me question people’s morality and the effect of social media. In today’s world, there is a need to document much of our lives. Doing so has often times made us do wrong things we normally wouldn’t do. We’d do it for the likes, for the RTs, for the thumbs up. We end up selling a part of our soul just to get a moment’s fame. Is it worth it?

Another point in this episode is morality. No matter how wrong a person can be, is it right for people go through emotional and mental torture as a form of punishment? How is another person’s punishment a form of enjoyment or entertainment for others? This is exactly the kind of thing we are doing now. We are so quick to judge others. We easily call out people and humiliate them for doing something. We have left our sense of morality. We tend to capture things to document and in the end persecute others for doing exactly just that.

Season 3

Episode 2: Nosedive

Black Mirror - Nosedive

A woman desperate to boost her social media score hits the jackpot when she’s invited to a swanky wedding. But the trip doesn’t go as planned.

EVERYBODY NEEDS TO WATCH THIS.

I think this episode hit a lot of nerves! We’re thrown into this world where people are judged and treated based on their social media score. This girl is so determined to get her score up that she has faked everything. She thinks that having a high score would make her happy, truly happy.

I LOVE THIS EPISODE SO MUCH. As a person who is taking time off social media to restructure her life, watching this gave me the courage to continue being on hiatus. The world we live in nowadays is dependent on likes. Our satisfaction comes not from living our lives but rather on the acceptance of other people. We are slowly doing things not for ourselves but for the others. We’re brainwashed to believe that our happiness comes from having what other people have. We have forgotten how to live for ourselves.

Episode 6: Hated in the Nation

Black Mirror - Hated in the Nation

The death of a journalist at the center of a social media firestorm leads a veteran detective and her tech-savvy apprentice to a chilling discovery.

Another great episode that somehow relates to social media.

The plot basically revolves around electronic bees killing people. Police then discovered that the killings are based on a social media game where users vote on who should die next. You can nominate anyone and whoever has the most number of votes will get killed by the end of the week.

This episode is sort of boring, in a way. But what really got to me was the fact that we are so guilty of this already. We persecute anyone we see on social media who have done a terrible thing and let that thing define their life. If we see a person do something bad, we call out not to teach or educate but to humiliate. We don’t think how that humiliation (or public call out) can affect a person to the point where it can affect them far worse than what they did.

This episode for me was a wake-up call. It aims to remind us of the consequences of our action when we decide to join the bandwagon and humiliate someone for a mistake they did.

Season 4

Episode 2: Arkangel

Black Mirror - Arkangel

Worried about her daughter’s safety, single mom Marie signs up for a cutting-edge device that monitors the girl’s whereabouts — and much more.

OH, MY GOODNESS IS ALL I CAN SAY.

This episode is for all those overprotective parents. This is a reminder of what could potentially happen when we put leashes on people. They tend to lose control in the end. Please watch this. Not because it has taught me anything or made me realize any lessons but rather just because it is such a fun episode to watch. A bit dark but perfectly played.

Episode 3: Crocodile

Black Mirror - Crocodile

Architect Mia scrambles to keep a dark secret under wraps, while insurance investigator Shazia harvests people’s memories of a nearby accident scene.

It’s another dark episode. There’s really not many lessons I’ve realized here. It was just a fun episode. It reminds me in a way that we have to be careful of our decisions. We make a million each day and we have to live with the consequences of each. There is no turning back. There is no rewind, play, or pause. There is just the commitment we make to those decisions and how we have to live with it. It’s scary, isn’t it? But that’s life and we have to be responsible all the time.

If I had to choose my favorite season, it would have to be Season 3. Almost all of the episodes really made me think and question my existence. Not only was the plot of all episodes really good, it was also a visual pleasure. If you haven’t watched Black Mirror, I highly suggest you do. It’s not like your typical series since every series can be watched individually. You don’t need to start at Episode 1, Season 1 for you to appreciate the whole thing.

Have you watched Black Mirror? What’s your favorite episode so far?

    1. I’m going to be honest here and say na I don’t love it dahil dun sa lesbian aspect. Overall, storywise, ang ganda niya. Ang ganda nung lesson and all. Pero hindi pa kasi ako sanay na nakakakita ng mga ganon on screen and iba siya sa usual. Call me old school or whatever pero hahaha iba talaga yung aspect na yun for me.

I’m all for supporting the LGBTQ and diversity ah. Pero iba pa rin lalo na walang masyadong ganong mga movies/series dito sa atin. Hindi ako sanay… 😛 Tell me why it’s your fave!! I plan to rewatch some of my not-so faves kasi!

      1. Omg super late reply! Hahaha! Oh, I see… understandable kasi hindi pa naman talaga ganon ka-open ang pinas when it comes to seeing LGBTQ stuff and all, unlike other western countries. I can’t blame you tho, even I felt a little uncomfortable din watching some scenes! Hahaha. Pero it’s a happy-sad episode kasi. Parang out of all the BM episodes, eto lang yung ~*medyo*~ happy ending. You might want to give it a try. 🙂

  1. I have yet to watch Season 4 so I skipped your reflections on those episodes. I love this tv show and it’s something I rewatch every few time to remind me when I’m losing sight of what’s important. Everyone should watch it!

      1. Many episodes affected me, I can’t choose.

Nosedive because it’s the most relatable this time.

San Junipero because I imagined myself being in that situation and technically choosing between immortality and death. Some people are queasy about the lgbt plot but if you leave that aside, it’s about us closer to being able to upload our consciousness, memories, and whatever it is that makes us who we are into computers. That’s scary.

The Entire History of You – It would seem like a great idea to be able to remember everything. I don’t want to have the option to do that and for people to remember everything of me. I feel like life would be better if we forget some of the bad things to be able to look forward.
