I first read of Money Diaries on Richel’s blog months ago. Since then, I always find myself on Refinery29 reading how people decide to spend their money. I’ve always thought that I am financially savvy but lately (and since I’ll be sharing my money with my husband) I want to take it to the next level. What better way to analyze my spendings than writing everything down?

Day One

8 a.m – I lay in bed while scrolling through Twitter. It’s April Fool’s Day and my Twitter timeline is a mess. I’m waiting for the rest of my family to wake up. I know they had a late night due to the Easter Vigil they attended.

9:30 a.m – Finally my mom is awake and cooks us my favorite breakfast – longsilog. She used Longganisang Lucban which is my all time fave. I could eat this kind of breakfast every day. She tells me they already heard mass last night. This sucks cause I really wanted to hear mass today.

12 p.m – After watching two episodes of Black Mirror, we eat again. Lunch was leftovers. I do the dishes and return to my room for more Netflix.

5:30 p.m – I finally stop watching Korean Oddeysey (Hwayugi) on Netflix. My mom tells me we have to get ready cause we’re eating out for dinner.

11 p.m – Dinner was pretty heavy and as much as I wanted to sleep earlier, I was still full. I decide 11 is as late as I want to stay up so I put my phone down and call it a night.

Daily Total: 0 PHP

Day Two

5 a.m – I have three alarms set up and finally I roll out of bed after the last one. I had the worst sleep ever. I was dreaming within a dream. It was freaky. I go take a shower to wash all of it away.

7:30 a.m – I arrive at work after a relatively chill commute. It’s surprising for a Monday. I used my usual route that costs 40 PHP. After logging in, I think of breakfast. After having a mental battle with myself, I force myself to eat this oatmeal I brought to work. I’m trying to watch what I eat and try to avoid fast food.

12 p.m – I step out to grab lunch at Rustan’s. My roasted chicken and rice meal cost 125 PHP. I wanted to have siomai and rice but there was no rice available anymore.

5:30 p.m – I’m out the door and headed home. Today was a pretty uneventful day, to be honest. It was just another day in my life while I try to earn money, lol. My commute did a damage of 95 PHP.

9 p.m – I relax and mentally prepare myself to sleep. Today was chill. It was good.

Daily Total: 260 PHP

Day Three

5:30 a.m – I woke up later than usual and rush out the door. I arrive at the office two and a half hours later. My morning commute costs me 40 PHP. I also reloaded my beep card on the way to work. That cost me 100 PHP but it’s going to last me for another week so it’s not so bad.

8:30 a.m – There’s a fire drill in our building. I was so annoyed! They made us walk under the heat of the sun and stay at this open area parking. My friend and I found a way out but since we can’t go back inside the building we go to a nearby fast-food chain and have breakfast. I had the Yang Chow Fried Rice with Fried Dumpling and Pineapple Juice. Good thing my friend had extra money because all I had was 100 PHP.

1:30 p.m – After that rough morning, I head back up to the office and get some work done. I have my lunch at Rustan’s again. The chicken I had was a bit undercooked and definitely needed a lot more salt. For 130 PHP, that was one of the worst meals I’ve bought there.

Before heading back up to the office, I drop by Watsons to buy some shampoo. I am running low and I need a new one. I was shocked to see it so expensive. I usually just grab and pay but now that I’m trying to be more conscious of where my money goes, I’m just shocked that a bottle costs 150 PHP. I think I need to find a new shampoo brand.

5:30 p.m – Fast forward hours later and I’m out the door and headed home. I actually bailed from work earlier than what I’m supposed to but whatever. If I leave any later, I’m going to be stuck in traffic. My usual route cost me 95 PHP.

7:30 p.m – Before going home, I drop by a sari-sari store. I buy these spicy crackers worth 8PHP. I buy three, lol. Dinner is worth 32 PHP.

10 p.m – I lie in bed and think to myself “I spent over 500 pesos today.

Daily Total: 647 PHP

Day Four

5:15 a.m – I woke up earlier than yesterday but still rather late, lol. It’s a good thing traffic isn’t so bad that I arrived at the office two hours after. Commute costs me 40 PHP again.

8:30 a.m – Another day, another fast food breakfast. I have oatmeal in my bin but I just don’t feel like eating it. I instantly need to go #2 when I eat it and I’m not in the mood to do the deed here at the office. My McDonald’s breakfast cost me 72 PHP.

1 p.m – Lunch was siomai and rice. I’ve been craving this for weeks! This is not your ordinary siomai. This is the real tasty sulit kind. For 75 PHP, it really fills me up and gives me energy for the rest of the day. I also had Dutchmill (23 PHP) as a dessert/drink.

5:15 p.m – Another day, another dollar. Work was okay today. There wasn’t really much to do and I had time to blog (yes, I blog at work when I can to relieve stress). I spend the usual 95 PHP to get home.

8 p.m – I thought I could make it to the next day with just my meal. I was wrong. I head out to the nearest convenience store and buy a snack. It cost me 12 PHP.

Daily Total: 317 PHP

Day Five

5 a.m – I wake up earlier than usual and head off to work. Usual route costs me 40 PHP again.

8:30 a.m – My friend invites me for breakfast. I had bacon, eggs, and rice. It cost me 55 PHP. Surprisingly, this was from the cafeteria. I normally don’t eat there because it doesn’t fill me up. Today was different. Maybe it was because of the bacon (I don’t have bacon often and consider it as a luxury.)

1 p.m – My officemates and I ran into our previous boss. He treats us to lunch at Frankie’s. I’ve had chicken three out of the four lunches I’ve had at the office. I’m going to be a chicken at this point. I wish there were cheaper alternatives here at the office. 😥

5:15 p.m – I head out the door and say sayonara to my officemates. Work has been pretty slow lately and I like it. LOL. I’m worried about tomorrow’s calls but we’ll worry about that tomorrow. The commute home costs me 95 PHP.

8 p.m – Mike and I discuss our financial status. I won’t bore you with the details but believe me, it’s going to be tricky. We’ll make it through, I know. This task of writing down where my money goes is such a blessing in disguise.

10 p.m – I relax and decide to call it a night. I’m so excited for the weekend (big plans). I cannot wait to do nothing and save some money.

Daily Total: 190 PHP

Day Six

5:30 a.m – Friday, late day! I wake up later than usual because man, am I exhausted. I look at the clock and realize I made a mistake waking up later than usual, lol. I rush out the door and go through the usual commute. It costs me 40 PHP again.

8 a.m – My friend and I decided that today would be a good day to eat at Jollibee. We walk three blocks for it. I have the corned beef, egg, garlic rice, and pineapple juice meal. I prefer Jollibee’s breakfast over McDonald’s. Maybe cause it’s more Filipino tasting? Anyway, it costs me 115 PHP.

12:30 p.m – FREE LUNCH!!! ❤ I wanted to get more but it wasn’t enough for the whole team so I go down to buy extra food. I settle for Turks and Lychee Green Tea from Cha Time. I’m trying to stay away from Cha Time but it’s so good. My extra lunch costs me 160 PHP. I also buy Mentos worth 32 PHP. Why is everything so expensive?

5 p.m – I sneak out of work and go home a little earlier than usual. I am so excited to go home. This week has been tiring and I really just want to go home and relax. Work is really stressing me out! The usual commute costs me 95 PHP again.

Daily Total: 442 PHP

Day Seven

9:30 p.m – To be honest, this day went by pretty fast. Mike and I did some errands. We decided to combine our remaining weekly money and use that as our budget for the day. I contributed 300 PHP and my driving skills. I hate driving in Manila but there’s really no other choice.

Daily Total: 300 PHP

I think I did a relatively good job this week. In total, I’ve spent only 2,156 PHP. My usual weekly budget is 2,000 PHP so I’m not sure where I got the extra 156 from. Maybe it’s the loose change I usually keep in weird places. I’m hoping next week would be better. I plan to cut some of my expenses by bringing breakfast/lunch to work. I’m not sure how that’ll work. Let’s see!

  1. My usual budget is 2k for 2 weeks. And I think masyado kong tinitipid sarili ko hahaha. :p And longganisang lucban?? My Mom’s from Quezon and sobrang nagsawa ako sa longganisang ‘to. Laging may supply sa bahay hahaha

      1. Hahahaha grabe ang pagtitipid ko! Of course, I’d already buy essentials and groceries and whatever else I need sa day ng sweldo, then I set aside 2k as my allowance for an entire 2 weeks. I’ll probably post something like this soon!

  2. I am not sure if you’ve had a good week or a bad week. I’m not sure what PHP is. I know you said pesos so I’d have to do a conversion to what that is into GBP. But I’m sure you’ll make cut backs and see some savings. Thanks for the blog. I enjoyed reading it at 6.30am 🤗

    1. It’s a pretty good week for me. I usually go over the 2,500 mark. 😀 However, all my fellow Filipinos are saying they only have a 1500-2000 budget for 2 weeks. I’m going to have to challenge myself and beat that. It’s in Philippine Pesos. Is £30.66 a big budget for a week? Thanks for reading! ❤

    1. Nakakapanlumo siya pag sinusulat hahaha! Pero since I’m going through a phase, it’s a great exercise din. I plan to do this for a month kaya let’s see saan ba napupunta pera ko. I’d love to read your version too. Baka may makuha akong tips here and there from you 😉

  3. 1500 for 2 weeks. 2k if I have a call until 2:30 am in the office. Kapag nagtitipid ako ng sobra, nakakaya ko pa 1k in 2 weeks. Hahahaha

Bet ko gawin ‘to. Sa bujo na lang siguro. Tamad tamad ko na naman magblog eh.

    1. WOW. Paano ka umaabot ng 1500 for 2 weeks?

Nakakatuwa gawin to!

    1. Halaaaa pare-pareho kayo na 1,500 for 2 weeks. Sobrang di ko alam paano niyo pinagkakasya! Haaha. 😦

Mas mahirap talaga pag babies na and sariling household. Let’s see paano magbabago budgeting ko in a few weeks time wahahahahha.

      1. Oo ngbabaon ako, madalas wheat bread kasi nga diet dietan kuno haha. Mura at mas healthy 🙂

    1. Hahahaha!!! Super slump ka Krishel ah!!! 😛 Oo nga eh, super galing nila magtipid no. Yung budget ko for a week, two weeks na nila. Ang galing! Need natin maachieve yung level of tipid nila 😛

      1. HAHAHA! TOTOO TEH!
