Ever since I started on this goal of being a minimalist, I have been trying very hard to sell or discard of the extras in my life. One of the solutions I have found is selling via OLX. OLX is a Philippine based buying and selling website. You can post free ads of everything and anything under the sun.
If you’re wondering, here are the steps I follow to sell my used stuff.
- Make sure you have an account and log-in.
- Click ‘Sell Your Item Now’ button
- Fill-up the necessary information. Remember to be descriptive and try to include all the details buyers would want to know
- Click ‘Submit Ad’
Pretty simple right! But here are some of the lessons/tips I have learned so far to successfully sell my things.
#1 Try to be as descriptive as possible
When selling my books, I always follow a format for my description. Here, I put in all relevant information a potential buyer would want to read.
Title: Perfect You
Author: Elizabeth Scott
book is being sold for 150. Free shipping. NO MEET-UPS.
book is in great condition but there are some marks on the pages due to storage. pls check picture.
MOP: thru LBC or bank deposits/transfers.
#2 Think of yourself as the buyer and assess your ad
Just a taking it a notch further and assuring myself that I made no typos and that my ad is already ready for the world to see
#3 Always post pictures
If possible use high quality so potential buyers would be more interested in what you are selling. I always try to post at least three photos. For my books, I include the front, back and side shots. Doing this lessens the amount of interaction/text messages we have to send back and forth.
#4 Check your ad regularly
A feature of OLX (both for it’s site and app) is a chat option. Potential buyers can try to reach you through this method so always check it. Also, don’t be afraid to chat/text your buyers.
#5 Don’t be stupid and give out information that could hurt you
As a general rule for myself (and my online life) I only give out my first name. You only and will ever know me as ‘Kat.’ This is my attempt to protect my privacy. Don’t give out certain details of your private life that could be used for identity theft or whatever. For example, if you are selling a book and you will now ship it, always use a fake or an incomplete address. If the shipping company ever needs to contact you, your mobile number would be enough.
#6 Enjoy the process and don’t be afraid
A lot of people I know would ask me if selling online is safe. I say yes and just follow tip #5. Don’t be stupid and get fooled into scams. Just as long as you take precautionary steps to take care of yourself, you’ll be fine. 🙂
I have successfully sold over eight books using this method and my book case (and wallet) have been thanking me. OLX is truly a tool you can use to enhance your life. I will continue to use it to my heart’s content and so should you!
For all my Filipino readers out there, have you tried buying/selling through OLX? I’d love to hear your stories. I only have successful ones and would love to know if there are instances where people have been fooled or scammed. You know the drill, drop a line!
